I work within a life participation approach to neurorehabilitation. I follow the social model of disability, which embraces all areas of a person’s life. Treating the speech, language and communication difficulties within this approach allows appreciation of the environmental facilitators and barriers, personal identity and emotions, and participation in daily life.
The focus is on communicative identity; that is, what makes them who they are; with whom and how they communicate and engage; what is working; what they want to improve; how to strengthen participation in meaningful and motivating activities and projects; how to maintain important social links and develop new connections. This helps clients to set motivating and meaningful therapy goals, which are measured at regular intervals.
The approach I take with clients is based on my studies, work experience, training courses and evidence based research. Speech therapy for adults works best within the social model of disability with a focus on meaningful activities and goals. I find that a combination of impairment and social communication therapy, project based intervention and communication partner training, along with a dash of mindfulness, helps speech and language therapy clients attain effective outcomes, whether this is following a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or as a result of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease or a stammer.
Prior to setting up in private practice, I accumulated 15 years experience working in the NHS providing speech therapy for adults. In addition to my speech therapy experience, I have nearly 5 years experience working as a case manager for clients with acquired brain injury. This means I am experienced at managing and delivering bespoke neurorehabilitation within a litigation framework.
I work with a range of neurological disorders, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. I also work with clients who have a stammer. I see clients in the comfort of their own home. I am also able to see clients in other settings.
I am experienced in goal setting within a life participation approach. I have experience of impairment therapy, project based intervention and communication partner training. I am a LSVT LOUD certified clinician.
Keeping up to date with developments in my clinical practice is integral. Therapy is always underpinned by the latest evidence. I attend training courses focusing on working with neurological clients. I have regular clinical supervision.
I am experienced in supporting clients to work on meaningful goals. I endeavour to offer creative solutions to support clients to attain the best possible therapy outcomes.
